Independence Day Bento https://www.acraftedlifestyle.com/2019/independence-day-bento/ https://www.acraftedlifestyle.com/2019/independence-day-bento/#respond Wed, 12 Jun 2019 08:15:23 +0000 https://www.acraftedlifestyle.com/?p=2311 Happy 121st Independence Day, Pilipinas!

To celebrate, I made a quick bento for Zoë’s lunch at home today. Check it out!

Philippine Independence Day Bento
To start off, I gave the girl’s face a light brown color by mixing white rice with a bit of adobo sauce. Her body is colored pink using white rice mixed with beets juice. I then used nori to make her hair and her face details. To make her Independence Day ready, I gave her a small Philippine flag attached to a food pick.

For protein, I added the Philippine’s unofficial national dish and Zoë’s favorite: pork adobo. To complete the meal, I filled the other yumbox compartments with broccoli and grapes. Yum!

Unicorn Bento Using Natural Food Coloring https://www.acraftedlifestyle.com/2019/unicorn-bento-using-natural-food-coloring/ https://www.acraftedlifestyle.com/2019/unicorn-bento-using-natural-food-coloring/#respond Mon, 11 Mar 2019 01:13:38 +0000 https://www.acraftedlifestyle.com/?p=2150 A magical treat inside your little one’s lunch box? Why not!?! This unicorn surprise inside Zoe’s Yumbox sure is a feast! Not only is it pretty to look at, it’s also made healthier by using homemade natural food coloring!

Check out how I made this colorful meal.

Unicorn Bento Food Art

I always use natural food coloring in my food art to ensure Zoe’s meals are as healthy as possible. For this unicorn bento, I used turmeric and red cabbage to make yellow, blue and pink coloring. Making each color is pretty easy and takes very little time, too.

To Make Natural Food Coloring:

Yellow: Add a little bit of turmeric powder to warm water. Mix until you reach desired yellow color.

Blue: Slice and boil a bunch of red cabbage leaves in water until liquid turns reddish purple. Strain out the cabbage. Take the colored liquid and add a pinch or two of baking soda until it turns blue.

Pink: Using the same reddish purple liquid from the boiled red cabbage, add a few drops of lemon juice until color turns pink.

Unicorn Bento Food Art

The unicorn’s head and ears were shaped using plain white rice. The colorful mane was made by mixing white rice with the natural pink food coloring and the blue food coloring, then shaped onto the head. For the horn, I mixed a little bit of the natural yellow food coloring with rice. To finish off the unicorn, I used nori for the eyes and mouth, and added a tiny pink marshmallow on the cheeks.

To make a complete meal, I added chicken nuggets, slices of carrots, and kiwi. Healthy, colorful, and yummy!

With this fun unicorn meal, eating the rainbow couldn’t be more magical!

Bunny Bento https://www.acraftedlifestyle.com/2018/bunny-bento/ https://www.acraftedlifestyle.com/2018/bunny-bento/#respond Tue, 12 Jun 2018 03:34:36 +0000 http://www.acraftedlifestyle.com/?p=1904 Know somebunny who would love a cute little treat in their lunchbox? It’s back to school for some students in the Philippines, so I thought I’d share the simple Bunny Bento I prepared for Zoë a few months ago.

Check out what hopped inside the Yumbox!

Bunny Bento Food Art

The rabbit’s face, legs and ears are all shaped using white rice mixed with Adobo sauce. You may simply use brown rice, too. The cheeks are white rice formed into two tiny balls. I then cut ham for the nose and both ears, and used nori for the eyes and the whiskers. To finish off the bunny, I cut and shaped a tiny slice of carrot and attached it to a leaf-shaped food pick.

To make a complete meal, I added Pork Adobo below the rabbit, and filled the other compartments with ponkiat, cucumber slices, and edamame. Yum!

Moana Bento https://www.acraftedlifestyle.com/2017/moana-bento/ https://www.acraftedlifestyle.com/2017/moana-bento/#respond Thu, 27 Jul 2017 05:14:43 +0000 http://www.acraftedlifestyle.com/?p=1043 Like most young girls nowadays, my five-year-old loves Disney’s Moana. From watching the movie dozens of times and remembering all the lines, to memorizing the entire soundtrack, you can tell that she is pretty much obsessed with the movie. She listens to all the songs in different languages, and can even name all the foreign singers!

When she requested for a special bento lunch the other week, I knew I had to put together a special surprise in her lunchbox.

Make way! Make way! It’s Moana!

Moana Bento Food ArtI prepared everything in Zoë’s new Yumbox lunchbox. We recently bought the Yumbox Panino from BrightBrands.ph (@brightbrands.ph on Instagram) in preparation for her starting Year 1 next month, and although she’s still on her summer break, we needed to test it out.

Check out the bento details below.

Moana Bento Food ArtMoana’s face, arms and body, are all shaped using brown rice. I used nori for her hair and all the black details on her face. The white parts of her eyes are flattened white bread, cut to shape, while her nose is made of brown rice. For her top, I used a bit of tomato, and topped it off with white bread for the detail. Her skirt is also white bread, while her necklace consists of both brown and white bread to make the details. Then, to make the blue hue of her pendant, I brushed white bread with a tiny drop of natural food coloring, diluted in a bit of water. I finished off her look by cutting out her oar using brown bread.

To make a complete meal, I filled the other compartments with some chicken nuggets, broccoli and carrots, and a few orange slices.

Zoë enjoying her Moana Bento Food Art Zoë enjoying her Moana Bento Food Art
Zoë enjoying her Moana Bento Food ArtIt definitely was a sweet surprise for my little boss, and the lunchbox was emptied out in minutes! That sweet smile? That’s her way of saying “Thank you!” 🙂 Ahh, what can I say except “You’re Welcome!”

To end, I also have to say that everything fit perfectly in her Yumbox Panino. I love the different compartments and how each space is big enough to fill with healthy goodies for my five-year-old’s growing appetite. I am a big believer of providing variety in meals, and the Yumbox definitely helps me control the portions.

Wicked Food Art https://www.acraftedlifestyle.com/2017/wicked-food-art/ https://www.acraftedlifestyle.com/2017/wicked-food-art/#respond Fri, 07 Jul 2017 03:21:56 +0000 http://www.acraftedlifestyle.com/?p=1024 Food art alert!

Since my five-year-old is currently on summer break, we’ve been spending most days hanging out at home. We’ve been reading, watching movies, making art, and listening to music like there’s no tomorrow. We’ve had Wicked the Musical‘s album on repeat for almost two weeks, so I figured it was time to insert a little art into our current musical obsession.

Yesterday, I rummaged through my pantry staples to whip up a quick food art. Say hello to Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West.

Wicked Musical Elphaba Bento Food Art

For Elphaba’s face, I cut a slice of bread to shape and popped it into the toaster for a few minutes. I mashed some avocados, sprinkled it with a bit of salt and squeezed some lemon juice to taste. Using enough  avocado mash, I made sure to create a smooth surface onto the toast, spreading and patting down evenly. I added nori details for the eyes and nose, and carved out her lips using the skin of a red apple.

The rest of the black details (her body, her hair and her hat) are all nori, cut freehand, piece by piece. To help hold their shape and prevent the nori from curling, I mounted the nori shapes on top of flattened bread slices using a little mayonnaise . This gives each piece a sturdy frame and makes it easier to layer the parts.

To finish off the look, I sliced a carrot thinly into strips (julienned) and tied them around a pretzel stick to make the broomstick.

And there she is! Elphaba’s ready to leap!
